Road to Perdition

I am writing about a country about which what I had read and known seemed to have all changed drastically for the worse in last few years. That country is Iran. I read a shocking article about it and then later on happened to chat up with an Iranian co student at school who gave me a true, honest but very disturbing account of the nation’s state.

Iran always had extremely progressive and educated citizens in its society until recent years when it seemed to have all massively gone wrong. The situation there now is a perfect example of what happens to people whose minds are liberal but who are restricted or forced to lead a life which is not true to their souls. People get messed up and messed up big time !

Did you know about 5 million of the population in Iran are drug addicts, many of these addicts are woman who have given birth to a whole generation of crack babies and continue to do so. No wonder then that Aids is a growing problem because of contaminated needles and because of woman succumbing to flesh trade to feed their drug habits.

According to the U.N. World Drug Report for 2005, Iran has the highest proportion of opiate addicts in the world -- 2.8 percent of the population over the age of 15.

ARE YOU SURPRISED? ARE YOU SHOCKED?
I was, I am.

Naïve and ignorant me couldn’t guess the reason behind such a massive and seemingly exponentially growing drug problem in the country. The answer though was so obvious.

Most heroin sold in Europe and elsewhere comes from Afghanistan’s poppies. Drugs cross the permeable border with Iran on their way to Turkey and Europe despite Iran’s desperate efforts, costing many lives, to combat trafficking at the border. Europe doesn’t help Iran with the cost of policing, and does even less to finance Afghan farmers to plant alternative crops. On this route the drugs get leaked into the country thus giving easy access to people.

State of woman in the world, Value of human life, Pseudo social morals, World drug regulations, War against Afghanistan, Imperialism – all these issues get raised within this one example.

There are so many disturbing and unjust things happening around this world we call our own. I don’t want to sound idealistic but I honestly feel no longer is any country’s problem just its own. Specially through this revolution called ‘Globalisation’ we are more interconnected than ever before. The fact that there is a drug problem in Iran only reflects the greater realities of this problem elsewhere.

A time is due to come when ‘Globalisation’ would be truly economical, political, technological, ecological and social. A time when the whole world truly would be one big family!

Meanwhile, I feel for this pitiful state of a country with valuable natural resources, potentially intellectual citizens and a strategic geographical position. A country which gave so much to the world through its rich cultural and literary heritage. A country which gave us great Persian poetry through likes of Rumi, Omar Khayyam et al.

A country which was to be magnificent and palatial but which now is an edifice in shambles.

Radhika,
it's quite shockin really..the day you told me about this,i got worried about those people in Iran..
i think, why people start drugs is similar all over the world..It starts with curiosity and ends with pain. The mind can't afford to tolerate this kind of suffering. But what i wonder is,it's a remarkable accomplishment in a country where many women still wear full-coverage, black "chadors" in public and where even talking about drugs and sex is strictly taboo.
And Radhi,I believe separation of father and mother, bad friends of the family, class gap in society and poverty are the reasons for drug addiction among the youth. Anyways whatever be the reasons, what the government of Iran has to do to overcome this crisis? Rehabilitation of the victims..that's the present solution..and they just have to look for it..of course,it's a difficult task..but..hmmm..they should focuss on this issue..

ddd,

Yes, I'm shocked. We hope their leaders know more about this and looking for the best solutions.

You had mention about Rumi and I loved Rumi's poetry very much. I like to share with you a quatrain of Rumi's Shams-e-Tabriz :

"Everyone has someone, a friend to love,
And work, a skill to do it. All I have
Is a fantasy lover who hides
For safety in the dark of my heart's cave."

Im totally surprised by this sweety! Never thought Iran had a drug problem!! Shows how uninformed I am. thanks for letting us all know abt this.

I wonder why so many Iranian women turn to drugs tho. Is it cos of frustration and domination by their men? I think it boils down to lack of rights for women over there.

My intention with this article was to highlight the widespread of drugs in places where I was surprised to find the extent of its damage.
Secondly I took Iran as an example as it has world's largest population of drug addicts which is not a small problem at all. Also I wanted to bring out the reason behind Iran's problem and how it was being abused to feed world's drug habits.
I mentioned the woman's issue subtly because again it was painful for me to know that there are these beautiful woman indulging in prostitution behind their pious veils

You said: I honestly feel no longer is any country’s problem just its own. That’s exactly how I feel.
This is an embarrasing thing for my country, but I couldn’t stop my self and not to link to this post.
I’ve been in india since three years ago. I was in iran most of my life. I had friends there, most of them used drugs. Three of them died due to over doas. I never tried, I was know I can’t get myself out of it. But almost always I with them.
I was going to write a post in my blog about it actually. I’m just a little too busy with exams these days.

Thank you for this post. it is good to see people who think about other corners of the world and care. It’s always good.

Excellent article, Radhika. It is shocking. I never thought about what you pointed out, viz., helping farmers to plant alternative crops!

I think drugs are the root for a lot of problems in the world. In the US, we hear about so many crimes done out of drugs or for the drugs.

I wish governments try to find innovative ways to curtail this problem. You already pointed out a couple.

By the way, the tone of the article shows how genuinely concerned you are.

Super-REALISM Radhika, you are a very special, SPECIAL, woman for posting this information, and done so well, with so much heart, feeling and compassion! And you are totally right about it being the whole worlds problem, IT IS!

I knew, but didn't know the rate was this high, as you say. I have some Iranian acquaintenances here in Texas and they have told me some stories. Also a friend in another country is very up on the internal population problems in Iran. Also I read recently that they outlawed liberal professors, dismissed them from all the higher education facilities thruout the country. I am afraid their solution will be to execute for the offenses, they are quick to do that for whatever they consider a moral issue problem. I feel extremely compassionate toward the population, held in moral slavery by the leaders, that only causes immorality to be more attractive and become more accessible.

Sad, very SAD. Hopefully there will soon be some changes coming to the people thru world involvement in their governments ways. But who knows, we have to hope and pray for them, sorely they need all the help they can get, everyway they can get it!

Thanks for the visit at my blog, you are indeed a jewel and a treasure all by yourself. Radhika!

My best to you and your family, hope you get and stay well. Keep up with your work and studies, these things are tough and you have to be strong my friend!

Just because a different culture exist somewhere else and that country is now facing drug problems does not mean that the culture is wrong and I am not at all saying that ur post in any way said or conveyed that.. Just that based on currrent global situation, different meanings can be interpreted from different scenarios... I just think it is unfair to link drug issues in Iran to other aspects of Iran...

I hope you get my point..

I don't know what we can do about Iran. Within about two years they will have the nuclear bomb. As you say the citizens there are oppressed....there are more executions than anywhere else but China... public executions to frighten the people. The society is entirely run by men, the police are often corrupt and in practice men are never convicted for sexual crimes unless they confess or there is a witness. It is a terrible state of affairs.

Travis,

Can I just say that you write so eloquently and also what you say makes so much sense dear brother.

Radhika,

It truly is a tragedy when this goes on but if we let something like this affect our own wellbeing we are in a position of being less effective in doing something about it. Change in never immediate. But take comfort from that fact that there are so many individuals on a path of helping others. So much so the momentum is gathering pace at a magnificent pace and nothing can stop this snowball. Just reading the responses of the people on your blog shows me how much people do care and want change for this world. The only way change occurs on such a massive scale is through the collective energy of all of us souls who desire and act for positive change! :)

Peace and blessings to you all!

A very sad state of affairs indeed.
On top of everything else - I had no idea!
On the other hand, I believe that when the country was invaded, its systematic destruction began.
From where I sit, Iraq, as well as Afghanistan are - in fact a piece of land marked on a map - as fro them being "countries"? - I am afraid that for that more is needed, beginning with the emotional and economic integrity of its people.

Keeping people poor, hungry illiterate or drugged is a way of control/dictatorship - in my humble opinion.

The “free world” has either condoned or engaged in the active decimation of some nations and/or passively witnessed genocide in others … and I keep on being told that we are “evolving” I keep on getting emails on magic “enlightenment rays”…

(Just for added info, not as an excuse – God forbid! - I recently heard that the troops are engaged in the use of drugs – some that have come to seek asylum in Canada, after “deserting” claimed its rampant use and the only way they follow orders).

Peace to you and our dear world

Radhi,

hope you are feeling better now (health wise)...

I was shocked several years ago when I found out the percentage of teenagers addicted to drugs in mumbai, India. Since then I stopped being surprised or shocked. Iran is an interesting country with a combination of extreme conservative human values and extreme modern life style and facilities. Adding passion to this only complicates the issue. I dont agree with your opinion about drugs being easily available to Iran merely due to its geography. I also believe that people being addicted to drugs should be seen as a local or regional problem anymore. it is a global problem what with the fast-paced globalization. I just feel sad realizing all these things. I am especially very sensitive towards drugs related issues, coz it kills a person coz it is immensely addictive. I also dont like the escapism that drugs provide to a person once consumed. I have few freinds here whose family members have been drug addicts and have seens from close quarters what that does to a family. If you get a chance please do watch the movie "requiem for dream". It is a very very depressing movie about drug addicts and just thinking about the movie makes my throat choke.... good article by the way

I'm a Socialist, so the abuses of the Sha and conservatives led to the glorious revolution.

Funny how in Iraq the US military and the current regime seems to be killing more insurgents than the previous evil dictatorship did.

So who is a dictator
Who is evil & oppressive?

But Iran and opium dependancy does not surprise me.

Do you know what percentage of the West and especially the US are addicted to anti-depressants, or sleeping pills or other pharmaceutical drugs. Big Business!

Big Profits, that is before we consider alcohol and other recreational drugs.

He is an educated hawk who rose to power via a democratic election. His posturings remind me of Hitler in 1932. I hope that the Iran citizens stone themselves too much to create problems for the rest of us, lest we end up with this Nazi and his countrymen as the evil of the 21st century.
